Our Journey: From Gateway Platform to Embedded Payments Leader
From our roots as a payment gateway to becoming a leading provider of embedded payments infrastructure, we are constantly evolving and innovating to meet the needs of our partners and their merchants. We’re on a journey 20 years in the making, and we can’t wait to see what comes next.
Reaching our 10 billionth transaction is more than just a company milestone — it’s a testament to our team’s innovation and hard work and the trust our partners put in us to deliver reliable, secure payment processing and merchant relationship management solutions.
NMI was founded in 2001 with a mission to serve independent sales organizations (ISOs), payment facilitators (PayFacs), banks and other experts in the payments space. While we started as a payment gateway, it didn’t take long for us to realize that we could serve partners in more ways than one. So, we created a long-term plan to become the number one payment enablement platform, providing everything our customers needed to process payments, from sign-up to payout.
Instead of building everything ourselves, we sought out the best-in-class technologies that would bring to life our vision for the NMI platform. It all started in 2018 with our acquisition of U.K.-based Creditcall, adding more omnichannel capabilities to our tech stack. From there, we welcomed USAePay in 2021, followed by IRIS CRM and Agreement Express in 2022, the latter two adding robust advanced underwriting and merchant management capabilities to our ecosystem.
Our most recent acquisition of Sphere Commercial Division in 2023 was a massive leap forward for our company, giving partners the choice to create merchant accounts directly through the NMI platform. Of course partners can continue to bring their own merchant accounts mixing and matching processors and merchant acquiring options. This moves us closer to our goal of a truly seamless, end-to-end payments experience that is built as a modular platform.
